LVT or LVP: start with the look
LVP means luxury vinyl plank and commonly recreates the appearance of wood boards. LVT means luxury vinyl tile and commonly offers stone or tile visuals. Both belong to the luxury-vinyl category; the format name alone does not tell you how a particular floor is built or installed.
Compare plank width, tile proportions, surface texture and the variation between pieces. A quiet pattern and a strongly varied pattern can create very different rooms, even when their overall color looks similar on a small sample.
See the whole room, not just one sample
Bring photographs that show the room from more than one direction. Include the floors it meets, cabinet colors and fixed finishes. In an open plan, talk through where the same floor will continue and where a material change would make sense.
- Compare a light, medium and deeper tone beside the finishes you are keeping.
- Look at texture and pattern variation as well as color.
- Identify doorways, changes in floor height and exposed edges that need finishing.
- Describe everyday traffic, pets, spills and the care routine you want to maintain.
Match the product and installation to the room
Luxury vinyl includes different constructions and installation methods. Floating and glue-down products have different requirements, so confirm the method for your selected floor before finalizing the scope.
Review the existing floor and subfloor, moisture conditions, flatness, room temperature and any attached backing. Do not assume extra padding is needed or permitted. If the room has a history of leaks or dampness, make that part of the first conversation.
A water-resistance or waterproof claim for a product does not remove the need to check the conditions beneath it. Confirm the selected manufacturer's instructions and any limits that affect the room, installation and cleaning.
Buy materials or plan installation through TDH

Luxury Vinyl Questions Before You Order
Can luxury vinyl go over my existing floor?
Possibly, depending on the selected product and the existing floor's condition. A floor that looks sound may still need preparation. Check the manufacturer's approved substrates and have the actual conditions reviewed before deciding to leave the old floor in place.
Does every luxury-vinyl floor need acclimation?
No single rule applies to every product. Follow the selected floor's instructions for storage, temperature and any acclimation before installation. Confirm those requirements when planning delivery and scheduling.
What should I include in a luxury-vinyl quote request?
Include the project location, rooms, approximate measurements, existing flooring, preferred timing and whether you need materials only or installation. Add photos and the product or visual direction you are considering.
