Bring room photographs and nearby finish samples. A quiet grain and lower-contrast palette create a different impression from pronounced knots and varied tones. If wood meets a tiled kitchen, entry or bathroom, compare floor tile and transition details as part of the same plan.
Plan for the room and its moisture conditions

Can hardwood go over concrete or in a basement?
Some engineered hardwood products are approved for those settings. Confirm the exact flooring, installation system and moisture requirements before choosing. A known moisture problem needs to be addressed; a different flooring construction is not a repair for it.
Can engineered hardwood be sanded and refinished?
Not every product is suitable. The usable wood layer, construction, condition and any previous sanding affect the answer. If future refinishing matters to you, check the product’s specifications before ordering rather than assuming every engineered floor can be sanded.
Can new hardwood match an existing wood floor?
Bring clear photographs and an existing sample if available. Species, width, grade, finish and changes from age or light can affect the match. Compare the options together and consider a deliberate transition when an exact match is not practical.
